Course Path
Plan Your Next Step
This course path is not a checklist that every diver must complete in order. Your certification, dive experience, recent activity and learning goals all help determine the right direction.
- Earn your first certification: Open Water Diver
- Build experience in different environments: Advanced Open Water Diver
- Strengthen prevention and emergency response skills: Rescue Diver and EFR
- Develop professional leadership and teaching skills: Divemaster and Instructor Development
Open Water Diver
Open Water Diver
The PADI Open Water Diver course builds the knowledge and core skills required for recreational scuba diving through knowledge development, confined-water practice and four open-water training dives. Skills include equipment assembly and checks, buoyancy control, mask clearing, regulator recovery and use, descents and ascents, and underwater hand signals.
Advanced Open Water Diver
Advanced Open Water Diver
The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course builds experience across different environments and dive themes through five Adventure Dives. Options include underwater navigation, boat diving, Peak Performance Buoyancy, night diving and deep diving.
Enriched Air Diver
Enriched Air Diver
Enriched air contains more oxygen and less nitrogen than standard air. At the same depth, it can extend your no-decompression time. The course covers analyzing cylinder oxygen content, labeling and logging cylinders, setting a dive computer for enriched air, and planning dives based on partial pressure of oxygen, depth and time.
Rescue Diver
Rescue Diver
The PADI Rescue Diver course focuses on preventing problems and assisting divers in difficulty, both underwater and at the surface. Scenario-based training includes self-rescue, helping a stressed diver, surface rescue and emergency management.
Emergency First Response
Emergency First Response (EFR)
Emergency First Response provides CPR and first aid training for divers and non-divers. Hands-on training includes CPR, AED use, primary and secondary care, illness and injury assessment, scene safety, calling for help and providing care until emergency services arrive.
Divemaster
Divemaster
PADI Divemaster is the first professional-level certification. Training covers dive planning and briefings, leading and supervising divers, assisting with courses and supporting day-to-day dive center operations.
Open Water Scuba Instructor
Instructor Development Course (IDC)
The PADI Instructor Development Course focuses on structuring courses, demonstrating skills, assessing learning and managing risk. Training includes lesson planning, knowledge presentations, skill demonstrations, student performance evaluation and feedback, helping candidates teach to course standards while meeting student needs.
